THE LAKE OF MOON TREK (OVER BARALACHA-LA BY THE CHANDERTAL)

REGION : MANALI, LAHAUL AND SPITI VALLEY
SEASON : MID JUNE TO MID OCTOBER
DURATION : 21 DAYS
GRADE : INTRODUCTORY TO MODERATE
HIGHEST ELEVATION : 4900 METRES

This is extremely popular. It offers spectacular views of the Greater Himalayas, and contrasting views of thickly forested Kullu valley and the barren rugged and untamed valleys of Lahoul & Spiti. Highly recommended for those who want to see the Himalayas at their beautiful and rugged best. The trek to Baralacha-la (4950 m) involves some river-crossings with a rope and harness plus experience in their safe use. In early part of season, residual snow bridges are often in place, making the river crossings quite straightforward. Batal is situated at the base of the mighty Kunzum-La (4550 m). Batal area is particularly important geologically as the Pir-Panjal Range, the main Himalaya and the Baralachga Range merge near the Kunzum-La. Batal is also starting point for the Chandertal Lake (the lake of moon)- A majestic serene lake surrounded by mighty Himalayan peaks. A vast meadow, is the camping site on the banks of this enchanting lake. During springtime, it is carpeted with hundreds of kinds of wild alpine flowers.
